Having a disability can create barriers and all kinds of challenges to being independent. Roads To Independence can help you with basic needs that will help you achieve a meaningful and independent life. People with disabilities should have the same access to having a great quality of life as everyone else.

Our independent Living Specialists (ILS) can provide resources and services to help you improve your quality of life. We can help you set goals and help prioritize and sequence step to work on those areas that are holding you back from independence. They will stay and work with you providing ongoing support and encouragement on your way to success.

There are five core services that Center’s for independent Living provide:

  • Peer Support
  • Information and Referral
  • Individual and Systems Advocacy
  • Independent Living Skills Training
  • Transition

YOUR INDEPENDENT LIVING SPECIALIST

Navigating the world of resources in the community can be overwhelming and also confusing. Our ILS have a great knowledge of the resources that are available in the community to help you seek out the resources you need. They can also advocate for you by helping you communicate with Social Security, landlords, medical providers, other social service providers, employers as well as others. They can also help you fill out paperwork and assest in making calls on your behalf.

HOUSING

Finding affordable housing can be a challenging task and can be daunting for anyone. Our ILS help people with disabilities to find accessible housing and can also help resolve disputes with landlords and the housing authorities. ILS can also assist individuals who are currently in skilled nursing facilities, assisted living centers, or Intermediate care facilities to transition back into a community based housing situation. We will advocate on your behalf to help you to meet this goal.

TRANSPORTATION

Transporting can be a challenge for a person with disabilities. Our ILS can assist in identifying ways to overcome this barrier by helping individuals by assessing available options to transportation. This could be signing up for UTA Paratransit services, setting you up with a UTA Travel Training, who will help you learn how to use the public transit system, or enrolling you in our Volunteer Driver Transportation Program.

BENEFITS FOR PEOPLE WITH DISABILITIES

Applying for Social Security benefits, SNAP (food stamps), Medicare, Medicaid, subsidized housing, and other eligible benefits is sometimes confusing and difficult. Our ILS have the skills to help navigate these and other resources. They understand the process and requirements needed to acquire these resources.

INDEPENDENT LIVING SKILLS

Our ILS can help you find in-home care through your insurance carrier for things like cooking, shopping, getting out of bed, taking care of personal hygiene. They can also sign you up for cooking classes that we provide here at the Center or in your home. If you need help in your home with budgeting, navigating the internet and social media, prioritizing home task, or acquiring assistive technology equipment they can assist you.

YOUTH INDEPENDENT LIVING SPECIALST

Our Youth ILS works with youth from the age of 5 through 25 years. They can help them and their families to navigate available resources towards independence. They can help youth transition into adulthood by setting goals and creating a plan for success. See Youth Services tab for more information.

PEER SUPPORT

Roads To Independence has a dedicated Peer Support Specialist who understands what it is like to have a disability and knows how to overcome obstacles toward independence. If you just want to talk, whntt to have company out in the community, or need other supports, they are there to help.

Our Independent Living Specialists do wonderful things in assisting individuals and families to assess and develop plans towards true independence. When a person meets with one of our staff, they help them identify barriers to their own independence. Goals are set and services are provided to help the individual accomplish those goal.  

Independent Living Specialist can help with housing, finances, advocacy, applying for Social Security, help you get your birth certificate and identification. They can assist you in finding a job or identify volunteer opportunities. They can also help you find other resources that you may not know are available in the community.
